These machines are steam boilers that were part of the Hovden Cannery that was once part of a factory in the sardine canning factories in Monterrey, California, called Cannery Row.  American writer John Steinbeck got ideas by studying the cannery industry to write his novel ‘Cannery Row’.  The factories closed in the early 1950’s from over fishing.
